Letter to My Children

Updated: Jun 26, 2020

May you stand up for what's right.

May inequality sit uncomfortably with your soul.

May you constantly strive to do better and to challenge the ways you were taught to think.

May you see the need for change.

May what hurts someone else, hurt you too.

May you always give someone the benefit of the doubt.

May you never shy away from sharing your opinions.

May you question what people tell you can never change.

May you check your privilege and be compassionate towards those who don’t have the same advantages.

May you grow up in a world different from mine.

May you always go out of your way to uplift and support marginalised groups.

May you listen.

May you educate yourself throughout your life and never stop.

May you always respect the indigenous people of whichever land you find yourself.

May you understand that learning about racism is a privilege because you aren’t experiencing it.

May you commit to being anti-racist.

May you surround yourself with people who think the same way you do.

May you never be afraid of older people who have a narrow view of the world.

May you grow up in a word where protagonists and heroes are made of all colours, genders and sexualities.

May you speak out against all the ”ists” and their ”isms”.

May you acknowledge the difficulties some people have faced for centuries.

May you never pretend to understand the experiences of people of colour.

May you learn from your mistakes, because you will definitely make them.

May you not just say you’re an ally, actually be one.

May you be aware of your biases, and surround yourself with people who can guide you past them.

May you never make oppression about yourself.

May fascists make your blood boil, but may you never stoop to their level.

May you care about all people and may you strive to always treat them with the utmost respect.

Above all, may you show love to every single person that crosses your path.
